Diamond vs. Mounting: Which Is More Important?

Purchasing a diamond engagement ring requires the balance of a lot of different factors. You have the center diamond that typically is the most expensive part of the purchase, but there is also the mounting to take into consideration. The mounting can completely transform your diamond depending on the kind of setting that you purchase. I can’t tell you how many times I see a customer with a very expensive diamond set in a mounting that costs less than $1,000. We always emphasize quality over quantity when deciding on a diamond, but there is something to be said about how a more elaborate mounting can enhance a diamond. Generally speaking, an expensive diamond should be set in an expensive mounting. Below are two incredible examples of ring transformations where the elaborate mounting played a vital role in the overall size, sparkle and appearance of the ring.

Reset Engagement Rings

Left: Original three stone setting with two trapezoid shaped diamonds. Right: New three stone setting with two trillion shaped diamonds.

This gorgeous three stone engagement ring recently went under its last “renovation” when our customer decided that upgrading her side stones would give her a little more size. As we all know, diamonds do “shrink” on us and sometimes a new mounting can make us feel like our diamond just had a growth spurt. 🙂 In this re-setting, we upgraded her current trapezoidal shape side diamonds to trillion shape stones because the triangular shape reached farther, covering more surface area. Although the center stone is already impressive at over 4.00cts, this three stone ring currently measures larger than a single stone of comparable weight (which is over 5.00cttw). Transforming a single stone ring into a 3 stone ring (no matter the size) is always a recommendation of mine to increase size and sparkle.

Reset Diamond

Style # HE271

If a 3 stone ring is not your preference, the best alternative way to “grow” your diamond is to reset it in a mounting that has a double halo. Although this diamond double halo engagement ring is new, many have been surprised to discover that the center stone is a little over a 1.00 ct. The double u pave style halo, which is designed specifically for a snug fit, gives the illusion that the center stone is much larger. This ring covers more surface area than a 2.00 ct comparable stone. If you currently have a 1.00ct diamond, this style mounting can make your ring double in size. This unique mounting is ideal for anyone who loves antique style rings but also wants to increase sparkle, which u pave is better suited for.

The staff at deBebians is trained to assist you in resetting your diamond. We know how to manufacture a ring without the center stone and how to guide you through your mounting options (as we have many designs). As bridal manufactures, we understand how important a mounting can be in the transformation of a diamond ring.
