Top Moissanite Questions

Here are a few common questions our customers ask us about moissanite:

  1. How is moissanite measured?

Moissanite is measured in millimeters and given a corresponding DEW or diamond equivalent weight. For example, a 6.5mm round moissanite actually weighs about 0.88ct in moissanite. A 6.5mm diamond however would weigh around 1.00ct. Since carat weight varies depending on the type of stone at similar mm sizes, this is why moissanite is sold in millimeters and a stated DEW (diamond equivalent weight).

  2. Can moissanite chip?

Yes, like a diamond, moissanite can chip. I think people get confused by hardness and assume that it means a moissanite can’t/won’t chip. Moissanite measures 9.25 on the MohsHardness scale where a diamond is a 10.

  3. Which is better moissanite or diamond?

In my opinion, this really comes down to personal preference. Some want only a diamond and won’t consider moissanite at all. Some want only moissanite and won’t consider a diamond. The main factors for this include saving money, that moissanite is lab grown and conflict free, that moissanite has more fire and brilliance than diamond and that moissanite will last for years and years. When couples are deciding between purchasing a diamond or a moissanite, all of these factors are considered and ultimately it’s a personal choice.
