Recent Discovery: Planet Made of Diamonds

A planet has just been discovered by astronomers that appears to be one giant diamond.  With the planet being approximately 4,000 light years away, we will not be tapping into that amazing resource anytime soon.

Reuters was quoted as saying:

“The new planet is far denser than any known so far and consists largely of carbon.  Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond.”

This new planet has been named PSR J1719-1438 has about the same mass as Jupiter, however it is approximately 20 times as dense.  It is being theorized that this planet was once part of a much larger star that continually lost its layers over time.  The planet appears to contain oxygen as well as carbon.

Just think about all of the diamond engagement rings that could be made from this exquisite planet!
