Yellow Diamonds

Not all the yellow diamonds are rare, but some tints are. The more colorful the diamond, the less common it is and its value rises accordingly. There are many color grades for yellow diamonds, varying from faint yellow to fancy deep yellow. The most vivid yellow diamonds are mined in South Africa. The yellow color comes from the inclusion of nitrogen– nitrogen atoms are similar enough to carbon atoms that they easily take carbon’s place in formation process.

One of the most famous yellow diamonds is the Tiffany Yellow Diamond. It was discovered in Kimberley Mine in South Africa in 1878 and was cut into a cushion shape weighing 128.54 ct. The diamond has 30 more facets than the traditional round brilliant cut, which maximizes the brilliance. The diamond is known to only be worn by two women during its lifetime. They were Mrs. Sheldon Whitenhouse, who wore it at the Ball held in Newport, Rhode Island and Audrey Hepburn, who was photographed for publicity at the release of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
