Famous Royal Engagement Rings

Royal families have been the center of attention since the beginning of time and their precious jewels are no exception. Which royal engagement rings have made the list consisting of our favorites?

Grace Kelly was presented with this amazing three stone engagement ring by Prince Rainier III of Monaco. The Prince had originally proposed with ruby and diamond eternity band from Cartier, but it did not compare to the engagement rings that other Hollywood actresses were sporting at the time. The Prince replaced the original band with this stunning piece, which featured a 10.5 carat emerald cut center stone and two baguette diamonds, also from Cartier.

Kate Middleton’s sapphire engagement ring, which was previously belonged to the late Princess Diana, is one of the most iconic engagement rings of all time. Lady Diana Spencer selected this ring in 1981, which consists of 14 white diamonds set in a halo surrounded a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire.  The ring was created by Garrard and Co, which was the Crown Jeweller of the UK from 1843-2007. After his mother’s death, Prince William proposed with his mother’s ring to Catherine Middleton in October 2010. Since then, sapphire engagement rings have grown in popularity because of their beauty and affordability.

Rubies are among the rarest and most valuable gemstones, which is perhaps by Prince Andrew chose a ruby engagement ring when he proposed to Sarah Ferguson in 1986. However, it is rumored that the Prince chose this ring because the bold color of the Burmese ruby mimicked her fiery red hair. The ring was made by Garrard and Co and contained 10 white round cut diamonds. His choice inspired many others to choose similar gemstone engagement rings at that time.

In 2003, Felipe, Prince of Asturias proposed to former journalist Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano with a diamond eternity ring as opposed to a more traditional engagement ring. The ring features 16 baguette cut white diamonds set in a white gold band. Many modern women have decided that eternity bands are more practical for everyday wear.
